Dental Services:Cleaning & Sealants

Carus Dental offers a wide range of services that aid in the prevention of future dental problems. These include cleanings, application of sealants, and fluoride treatments.

A dental cleaning (known as a dental prophylaxis) is a procedure where plaque, stain, and minimal amounts of tartar are removed from the teeth. Routine cleanings are meant to clean primarily from the gum line up and are not meant for the treatment of more serious forms of gum disease.

A sealant is a process where a thin coating of material is placed within the grooves and pits of a tooth in an effort to prevent bacteria and sugar from collecting and leading to the formation of a cavity. This procedure is a quick, easy procedure that requires no need to numb the tooth. Primarily, sealants are placed on the permanent teeth of children. However, baby teeth as well as permanent teeth can be sealed. Even adults can have their teeth sealed.

Fluoride treatments are strong doses of various forms of fluoride that are placed on teeth after a cleaning. The fluoride is meant to strengthen the tooth 's enamel and help make it harder so that a cavity is less likely to form. Usually, following a fluoride treatment, it is recommended not to eat or drink for 30 minutes afterwards.

Expert Advice

Once dental sealants are placed, it is still important to have regular dental check-ups and cleanings so that the sealants can be checked routinely. Eating hard, sticky items can sometimes cause a sealant to fall off a tooth. Routine evaluation of the sealants is important so that they can protect teeth against the development of cavities.
